Executive Assistant to the General Manager(s)

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is seeking a permanent full-time Executive Assistant to the General Manager(s) based at the RDN Administration Building. 

The Executive Assistant supports the work of the RDN’s general managers through the coordination of process and administration functions relating to the assigned office(s) including projects and activities of a highly sensitive nature. This position also provides support to the divisions’ management teams with support, as required, to the Chief Administration Officer’s office in meeting corporate and departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Diploma in public administration, business administration or related program plus five years administrative experience in a local government. A Certificate in Local Government Administration with working knowledge of the Local Government Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act are assets. Experience working in a political environment with senior staff and elected officials is preferred. An equivalent combination of training, education and experience may be considered.  

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time Exempt position offering 35 hours of work per week with a salary range of $80,733 to $89,703 as well as a competitive benefits package.

Parks Planner

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Parks Planner with the Parks Services department, based in Parksville, B.C.

The Parks Planner contributes to the effective operation of the Regional District’s community and regional park system through creating and implementing park management plans, conducting site assessments, engaging with stakeholders, and preparing budgets and specifications. The role involves reviewing development proposals, managing parkland inventories, and setting design standards. The Parks Planner collaborates with community groups, government agencies, and internal teams, while also facilitating public consultations and promoting park-related initiatives. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Undergraduate degree in landscape architecture, land use planning, parks management or related field, plus five years’ prior job-related experience in park planning, development and management. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. Possession of a Class 5 Driver’s License is required, along with current First Aid and CPR Certification. POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (35 hours per week) Union position. The (2024) rate of pay is $43.90 to $46.21. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Fire Safety and Rescue Technician

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Fire Safety and Rescue Technician at the Nanoose Volunteer Fire Department.

Reporting to the Nanoose Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) Community Fire Chief, the Fire Safety and Rescue Technician is responsible for the oversight of maintenance and service of fire department apparatus and equipment, as well as supporting training and development programs, strategic initiatives and the procurement of goods and services in the support of fire/rescue operations to ensure firefighters are prepared and equipped to respond to incidents, and that loss of life, damage to property or injury due to an emergency incident, is prevented and/or minimized.

For reasons of operational efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of emergency services, the Fire Services and Rescue Technician must reside within the boundaries of the Fire Protection Service Area or within ten (10) minutes of the main fire hall, to allow for reasonable response times.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum three (3) years related experience in the field of Fire Rescue Services and Volunteer Fire Fighting. Ability to perform the physical duties of the Volunteer Firefighter role along with comprehensive knowledge of fire service operations, emergency management, Incident Command System, and the British Columbia Emergency Response Management System is required.

Must have NFPA 1001 Level I and II, Fire Services Instructor Level I, and Emergency Scene Management Level 1 certifications is preferred. Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement required, with commitment to obtain Class 3 within one (1) year of being hired, as well as a satisfactory driving record with no more than 6 points.

This is a permanent full-time Exempt position offering 35 hours of work per week with a salary range of $64,586 to $71,762 as well as a competitive benefits package.

Recreation Receptionists

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking casual Recreation Receptionists to join the Recreation and Parks Department. This is a public facing position focused on assisting the public in accessing recreation programs, facilities, events and services.  The job is based out of Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach and Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville. 

QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma (grade 12) plus one (1) to twelve (12) months prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Keyboarding, word processing, switchboard and basic office equipment experience is required, and experience working with ActiveNet or other recreation registration software is an asset. Current First Aid Level 1 certification is a requirement. 

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual union position with varied hours of work including evenings and weekends. The (2024) rate of pay is $30.45 to $32.05 plus 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a permanent part time Lifeguard/Instructor II at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

Duties include leading and instructing a variety water-based exercise classes (i.e., Aquafit), enforcing pool rules and pool safety for the public, routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, implementation of the facility’s emergency response program, providing first aid services and supporting office staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include high school graduation, with one (1) to three (3) years of pool/aquatic related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Applicants must possess and maintain the following certifications: 
•    National Lifeguard Award (Pool Option)
•    Lifesaving Society (Swim for Life) Instructor Certification
•    CPR Certification - Basic Rescuer or CPR “C” & AED

We are seeking to fill this position with a Level II certified applicant; however, we will consider Level I applicants if we are not able to fill the role with a Level II.

This is a temporary part-time union position for 6 months, with the possibility of ending early or an extension based on operational needs. The (2024) rate of pay is $22.62 per hour for Level I and $27.70 per hour for Level II. The successful incumbent may be entitled to 12.4% in lieu of benefits or the uninterrupted continuation of their benefits package, as provided for in the Collective Agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Maintenance Worker, Arena

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a casual Maintenance Worker - Arena to work at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville, B.C.. The Maintenance Worker contributes to the effective operation of the Recreation Department through the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of facility ice. 

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma plus Refrigeration Operators Certificate and Icemakers Training Course with one (1) to three (3) years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. WCB Level 1 First Aid or equivalent and Class 5 Drivers License are required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position with varied hours of work including evenings and weekends. The (2024) rate of pay is $32.94 to $34.67 per hour. As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

• Recognized First Aid certification/WorkSafe BC equivalency

Level 2 applicants must also posses and maintain the following certifications:
1000 hours at Ravensong Aquatic Centre Pool Operator (Level 1), and any one of the following: Lifesaving Instructor, Aquafit Certification (BCRPA Aquafit, CALA Aquafit Instructor), National Lifeguard Service Instructor, Lifesaving Society Swim for Life Trainer, or First Aid Instructor.

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual union positions. Hours of work vary, and evening and weekend work will be required. The (2024) hourly rate of pay is $22.62 (Level 1), and $27.70 (Level 2). As a casual employee, you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Skate Attendant - Casual

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking casual Skate Attendants in the Recreation and Parks Department at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Arena Services, the successful candidate’s duties include providing on-ice supervision and instruction of participants of public skating lessons, special events and skating/hockey lessons; cleaning and maintaining skate shop; cleaning, sharpening and maintaining rental skates and program equipment; and distributing and receiving rental and program equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a grade 10 education with one (1) to twelve (12) months prior job-related experience working with children, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  In addition, the applicant must possess strong skating ability and leadership skills, good communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member.  The successful candidate must possess a current Level One First Aid certification.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position with varying hours of work including evenings, weekends, and school holidays. The (2024) rate of pay for the position is $21.09 per hour, plus 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.
