Maintenance Worker, Aquatic

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking casual Aquatic Maintenance Workers based at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre (RAC) in Qualicum Beach.

This position contributes to the effective operation of the Recreation Department through the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of the RAC, including inspecting and cleaning all areas on a routine basis, maintaining the exterior, grounds, and signage, being responsible for building security, and assisting in routine maintenance of operating systems and equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a high school diploma, Pool Operators Level 1 Certificate, Building Maintenance Course, plus one to three years of prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual union positions. The (2024) rate of pay for the position is $31.26 to $32.90 per hour, plus 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Red Seal Millwright

ABOUT THE ROLE
RDN has an exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time Red Seal Millwright based in Nanaimo, BC, serving the Northern Communities, including the French creek Pollution Control Centre, Nanoose Bay Pollution Control Centre, and Northern Community Pump Stations.

Reporting to the Superintendent, Wastewater Maintenance, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of RDN's Wastewater Treatment Facilities by conducting inspections, maintenance, and repairs of essential infrastructure and equipment.

In this position, you will be primarily responsible for maintaining the wastewater treatment facilities’ machinery and equipment, supporting the Wastewater Services department to meet operational goals and service expectations.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for this role include an interprovincial Red Seal Millwright certification, with 1-3+ years of related experience in wastewater treatment or relevant industries such as municipal water and wastewater, oil and gas, pulp and paper, or mill and mining operations. Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (40 hours per week) Union position. The (2024) rate of pay is $41.54. The position offers an attractive benefits package including participation in the Municipal Pension Plan as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Maintenance Worker, Arena

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a casual Maintenance Worker - Arena to work at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville, B.C.. The Maintenance Worker contributes to the effective operation of the Recreation Department through the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of facility ice. 

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma plus Refrigeration Operators Certificate and Icemakers Training Course with one (1) to three (3) years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. WCB Level 1 First Aid or equivalent and Class 5 Drivers License are required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a casual Union position with varied hours of work including evenings and weekends. The (2024) rate of pay is $32.94 to $34.67 per hour.  As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Landfill Attendant

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking Casual Landfill Attendants in the Solid Waste Services Department at the Regional Landfill and Church Road Transfer Station sites.

Reporting to the Landfill and Transfer Station Supervisors, the successful candidates will contribute to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities by assisting both the public, and other team members at the Landfill and Transfer Station. General duties for this position will include screening loads, removing contaminants from recycling piles, responding to customer inquiries, maintaining site cleanliness, performing landscaping duties, and other duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for this position include a grade 11 education, plus one (1) year of prior job-related experience in a Solid Waste Management Facility, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

In addition, the incumbent must posses a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, Level One First Aid Certificate, working knowledge of WHMIS/SDS and safe work procedures, be in good physical condition with ability to complete heavy lifting, and have good communications skills.

POSITION DETAILS
These are Casual Union positions with varying hours of work. The (2024) rate of pay is $28.76 to $30.27 per hour plus 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Chief Millwright, Red Seal

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Chief Millwright in the Wastewater Services department, supporting the Northern Communities (French Creek Pollution Control Centre, Nanoose Bay Plant and Lift Stations) and Southern Communities (Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre, Duke Point Plant and Southern Pump Stations).

 The Chief Millwright with Wastewater Services contributes to the effective operation of the RDN’s Wastewater Treatment Facilities through the inspection, maintenance, and repair of buildings, equipment and environmental protection infrastructure at these facilities and pump stations. This position supports the Wastewater department by providing leadership and direction to team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals, and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for this position include completion of an interprovincial Red Seal Millwright ticket, plus five (5) to seven (7) years of related experience, preferably in a wastewater treatment facility, and a minimum one (1) year of experience in a supervisory role. Possession of a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License is required.  

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (40 hours per week) Union position. Shifts are Monday-Friday, straight days. The (2024) rate of pay is $45.93 to $48.35. The position offers an attractive benefits package including participation in the Municipal Pension Plan as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Lifeguard/Instructors Level 1 and Level 2

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking Casual Lifeguard/Instructors Level 1 and Level 2 at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.
Lifeguards assist in the creation, planning, organization, implementation, and evaluation of aquatic programs and special events. Duties include leading and instructing a variety of water-based exercise classes (i.e., Aquafit), enforcing pool rules and pool safety for the public, routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, implementation of the facility’s emergency response program, providing first aid services, and supporting office staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation and one (1) year to three (3) of aquatic/pool-based experience and/or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

The Lifeguard/Instructors Level I and Level 2 candidates must possess and maintain the following certifications:

• National Lifeguard Award (Pool Option)
• Lifesaving Society (Swim for Life) Instructor Certification
• CPR certification – Basic Rescuer or CPR “C” & AED
• Recognized First Aid certification/WorkSafe BC equivalency

Lifeguard/Instructor Level 2 candidates must also posses and maintain the following certifications:

1000 hours at Ravensong Aquatic Centre, Pool Operator (Level 1), and any one of the following: Lifesaving Instructor, Aquafit Certification (BCRPA Aquafit, CALA Aquafit Instructor), National Lifeguard Service Instructor, Water Safety Instructor Trainer, or First Aid Instructor.

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual union positions. Hours of work vary, and evening and weekend work will be required. The (2024) hourly rate of pay is $22.62 (Level I), and $27.70 (Level 2). As a casual employee, you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Superintendent, Operations, Wastewater Services

ABOUT THE ROLE
RDN has an exciting opportunity for a permanent full-time Wastewater Superintendent, primarily based at the French Creek Pollution Control Centre on Vancouver Island, B.C., servicing the northern communities of the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Reporting to the Manager of Wastewater Services, you will oversee the effective operation, maintenance, and compliance of the Department’s wastewater facilities, ensuring safety, regulatory adherence, and environmental standards are met. In this position, you will be primarily responsible for leading Wastewater Services staff to meet the strategic and operational goals of the RDN Board, managing the Department’s facilities, assets and operational permits to uphold regulatory and environmental requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS
You will need an undergraduate degree or diploma in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering or a related field, along with extensive related experience in wastewater or water services. Supervisory experience is also required, preferably within wastewater or water services, however supervisory experience in other industrial settings such as forestry, manufacturing or pulp and paper would be considered. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time exempt position offering 35 hours of work per week with a salary range of $109,838 to $122,042, as well as a competitive benefits package including employer-paid extended health and dental, employer-matched contributions to the Municipal Pension Plan and participation in the RDN’s flex days program.

Manager, Recreation Services

ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the General Manager, Recreation and Parks, the Manager, Recreation Services is responsible for the planning, coordination and provision of recreation services, and the operation and maintenance of recreation facilities in District 69 (Oceanside), and in the southern electoral areas of the Regional District. Based out of the RDN Recreation and Parks department office in Parksville, BC, this role coordinates and/or provides recommendations to the Board, and Recreation Service Advisory Committees.

QUALIFICATIONS
This is an incredible opportunity for a dynamic and experienced Recreation Services professional to foster vibrant community spaces and recreation services at the Regional District of Nanaimo. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership and strategic planning skills and a commitment to enhancing public programs. The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate degree in recreation administration or related program; with six (6) years related experience in a local or regional government setting and three (3) years in a supervisory capacity. POSITION DETAILS
The salary range for this position is $137,708 to $153,021 annually and is supplemented by a competitive total compensation plan.

Skate Attendant - Casual

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking casual Skate Attendants in the Recreation and Parks Department at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Arena Services, the successful candidate’s duties include providing on-ice supervision and instruction of participants of public skating lessons, special events and skating/hockey lessons; cleaning and maintaining skate shop; cleaning, sharpening and maintaining rental skates and program equipment; and distributing and receiving rental and program equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include a grade 10 education with one (1) to twelve (12) months prior job-related experience working with children, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.  In addition, the applicant must possess strong skating ability and leadership skills, good communication and customer service skills, and the ability to work independently and as a team member.  The successful candidate must possess a current Level One First Aid certification.
