Collective bargaining, labour relations and human resources activities for RDN employees are managed under the Corporate Services umbrella. The department oversees selection and recruitment, training and development, and compensation and benefits administration services for all employees of the RDN.

 

Transit Training Coordinator

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent full-time Transit Training Coordinator with the Transportation Services department. 

Under the direction of the Superintendent, Transit Development and Instruction, the Transit Training Coordinator contributes to the effective operation of Transportation Services by developing and delivering comprehensive training programs, building operational capacity, and providing administrative support. This position demonstrates leadership characteristics that align with departmental goals and objectives and plays a critical role with new employees by leading the onboarding process and providing instruction on policy, procedures, best practices, and safe work practices. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Required qualifications include a high school diploma and a certificate in training program development and delivery, plus four years’ experience developing, implementing and coordinating training programs as well as experience providing formal instruction and training. Experience working in transit operations is preferred, and an Adult Education Training Certification is deemed an asset. An equivalent combination of training and experience may be considered. 

Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Class 2 BC Drivers License with an Air Brake Endorsement will also be required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent full-time (40 hours per week) Union position. The successful incumbent must be willing to work a dynamic schedule to accommodate operational requirements, including mornings, evenings, and weekends. The (2024) rate of pay is $38.17 to $40.18. The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401. Maintenance Worker, Arena

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking a permanent part-time Maintenance Worker - Arena to work at Oceanside Place Arena in Parksville, BC. The Maintenance Worker contributes to the effective operation of the Recreation Department through the maintenance, cleaning, and preparation of facility ice.  

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma plus Refrigeration Operators Certificate and Icemakers Training Course with one (1) to three (3) years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. WCB Level 1 First Aid or equivalent and Class 5 Drivers License are required.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a permanent part-time Union position with varied hours of work including evenings and weekends. The (2024) rate of pay is $32.94 to $34.67 per hour.  The position offers an attractive benefits package as provided within the collective agreement between the Regional District of Nanaimo and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 401.

Equipment Operator

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo Solid Waste Services is looking to hire casual Equipment Operators to work at the Regional Landfill in Cedar and the Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville.

The Equipment Operators contribute to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities through the skilled operation of machinery to ensure that the Regional Landfill and Transfer Station are efficiently utilized. This position supports the Solid Waste Department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma plus Heavy Equipment Operator Trades Program Certificate with two (2) years prior job-related experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge of landfill operations is an asset. 

Possession of a valid Class 3 BC Drivers License with Air Brake Endorsement, Survival First Aid course, working knowledge of WHMIS regulations and procedures, knowledge of safe work and operation procedures, and good judgment with manual dexterity skills.

Equipment Operators must be available to work at both the Regional Landfill in Cedar and Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville. 

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual Union positions. Hours of work vary, and weekend work is required. The (2024) hourly rate of pay is $32.10 to $33.79. As a casual employee you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

Landfill Attendant

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo is seeking Casual Landfill Attendants in the Solid Waste Services Department at the Regional Landfill and Church Road Transfer Station sites. 

Reporting to the Landfill and Transfer Station Supervisors, the successful candidates will contribute to the effective operation of the Solid Waste Facilities by assisting both the public, and other team members at the Landfill and Transfer Station. General duties for this position will include screening loads, removing contaminants from recycling piles, responding to customer inquiries, maintaining site cleanliness, performing landscaping duties, and other duties as requested. 

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications for this position include a grade 11 education, plus one (1) year of prior job-related experience in a Solid Waste Management Facility, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

In addition, the incumbent must possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, Level One First Aid Certificate, working knowledge of WHMIS/SDS and safe work procedures, be in good physical condition with ability to complete heavy lifting, and have good communications skills.

These are Casual Union positions with varying hours of work. The (2024) rate of pay is $28.76 to $30.27 per hour plus 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.

PPT Lifeguard/Instructor II

ABOUT THE ROLE
The Regional District of Nanaimo has an employment opportunity for a permanent part time Lifeguard/Instructor II at the Ravensong Aquatic Centre in Qualicum Beach.

The successful candidate will assist in the creation, planning, organization, implementation and evaluation of aquatic programs and special events. Duties include leading and instructing a variety water-based exercise classes (i.e., Aquafit), enforcing pool rules and pool safety for the public, routine preventative maintenance and safety checks, implementation of the facility’s emergency response program, providing first aid services and supporting office staff.

QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications include high school graduation, with one (1) to three (3) years of pool/aquatic related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Applicants must possess and maintain the following certifications: 
•    National Lifeguard Award (Pool Option)
•    Lifesaving Society (Swim for Life) Instructor Certification
•    CPR Certification - Basic Rescuer or CPR “C” & AED
•    Recognized First Aid Certification/WorkSafeBC Equivalency
•    1000 hours at Ravensong Aquatic Centre
•    Pool Operator (Level 1)

POSITION DETAILS
These are casual union positions. Hours of work vary, and evening and weekend work will be required. The (2024) hourly rate of pay is $22.62 (Level 1), and $27.70 (Level 2). As a casual employee, you will also receive an additional 9% in lieu of benefits including vacation and statutory holidays.
