Illegal Dumping: Report & Prevent

Illegal dumping is a long-standing concern in the Regional District of Nanaimo. In 2018, over 48 tonnes of illegally dumped material was recovered and disposed of appropriately. Illegal dumping comes at a cost to everyone in the Regional District of Nanaimo. Illegally dumped material can have serious effects on the environment, wildlife habitat and the ability of others to use and enjoy outdoor recreational areas. The RDN is asking for your help to stop dumpers by reporting information to the Ministry of Environment RAPP hotline.

Remember, if you see someone committing illegal dumping, do not endanger yourself by approaching. Instead, record and report identifying information to ensure the person responsible will be caught and fined.

Illegal Dumping Prevention

Strategies to prevent illegal dumping focus on making it difficult for people to dump material illegally and encouraging residents to bring waste to the appropriate location. Many illegally dumped items are free or low-cost to recycle or dispose of at local depots. Community Cleanup

One of the best ways to deter illegal dumping is by keeping areas clean. It’s been proven that areas with lots of litter and dumped garbage are more prone to illegal waste disposal activity. If your community organization or charity is interested in organizing a community cleanup, you may be eligible for free waste disposal at a RDN Solid Waste Facility
