Did you know the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) provides emergency management services to its seven electoral areas and the District of Lantzville? The RDN Emergency Services (ES) team oversees the preparation, mitigation, response and recovery for emergencies, the FireSmart program and community safety grants. The RDN also participates in Emergency Management Oceanside, in collaboration with the City of Parksville and the Town of Qualicum Beach for emergency programs and initiatives. We work to build relationships and collaborations with local authorities, First Nations, provincial agencies and partners.
If the RDN Emergency Alert system is activated
RDN Emergency Services will outline the nature of the emergency and how to obtain additional priority information and supports for public safety. This can include instructions to:
- Refer to RDN Emergency Services home page (this page) for information and notices/alerts.
- Follow trusted provincial sources, provincial notifications, or updates if applicable and available.
- Monitor trusted social media sources e.g., RDN Facebook page and X (formerly Twitter).
- Watch/listen/read updates from local media outlets such as radio and television. Did you know sometimes public information might only be transmittable via radio stations if electricity is out. Have you got a battery operated or wind-up radio?
Are you prepared?
Here are the steps you can take to prepare immediately including registering now for the RDN's emergency and safety alert notifications (Voyent Alert), building a stay-at-home emergency kit, getting a grab-and-go bag ready, stocking plenty of water and completing your home emergency preparedness plan. Our Get prepared section also provides advice, videos and guides for preparedness at home, on your farm, in your small business, place of work, school, car or if you are planning for people with additional needs. Learn about qualifying and registering for Emergency Support Services to access essential supports and referrals (if your residence is impacted by an emergency). Understand everything you need to know about emergency alerts and FireSmart.
Remember! Being prepared for at least 72 hours of self-resiliency is a must. Being prepared for 14 days is ideal.
Is your community or neighbourhood prepared?
Steps you and your community members can take via the Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program.
