British Columbia Ambulance Service (BCAS):
- The BCAS is Canada's only provincially-operated ambulance service, and provides emergency pre-hospital treatment and transportation by ambulance to the public and visitors to B.C. The primary mode of ambulance response is ground transport. Helicopter scene response is based on a number of criteria including patient condition, estimated time to hospital, as well as operational factors such as weather conditions and the availability of safe landing zones. If used, a helicopter will usually respond to an airport or recognized helipad to meet a ground ambulance.
Emergency Support Services (ESS):
- An organization of volunteers and community groups dedicated to providing food, lodging, clothing and family reunion to members of the public who have been affected by a disaster or emergency. Disasters can be natural, such as flooding, landslides, urban interface forest fires, intense weather conditions, and earthquakes; or man-made, such as dangerous goods spills, apartment and house fires, major search and rescue operations, and major power failures and civil disorder.
- ESS will also provide support to emergency responders and in certain circumstances to non-residents and visitors.
- The level of services is basic, responding to the services considered essential for the immediate and continuing well-being of those affected.
- Pre-planned reception centers will be set up during an emergency to provide access points for evacuees to the services they need. ESS volunteers and community organizations will staff these reception centers.
BC Hydro, Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Environment, Emergency Management and Climate Readiness and other valued provincial partners and their contractors assist in pre-planning, response and recovery in the event of a disaster.
