Dashwood Fire Hall Project Approved by Residents
The Dashwood Fire Hall replacement project was approved by the electors through an Alternative Approval Process (AAP) that concluded on Friday, July 26, 2019.
In accordance with Section 86 of the Community Charter, approval by AAP was obtained for this project when less than 10% of electors within the service area submitted an elector response form by the July 26, 2019 response deadline. Of an estimated 1,751 electors, 9 eligible response forms were received.

Bylaw 1785 – A Bylaw to Establish a Service in a Part of Electoral Areas F, G, and H for the Purpose of Constructing the Dashwood Fire Hall
Bylaw 1789 – A Bylaw to Authorize the Borrowing of Four Million ($4,000,000) Dollars for the Purpose of Constructing the Dashwood Fire Hall
The Board of the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) intends to adopt “Dashwood Fire Hall Service Area Establishment Bylaw No. 1785, 2019” (“Bylaw No. 1785”) and “Dashwood Fire Hall Loan Authorization Bylaw No. 1789, 2019” (“Bylaw No. 1789”) to establish a service to facilitate borrowing of up to $4,000,000 (Four Million Dollars) to be repaid over a period not to exceed 25 (twenty-five) years in order to finance the costs of constructing a fire hall to serve the proposed Dashwood Fire Hall Service Area (the “Service Area”) within the Regional District of Nanaimo. The Service Area is within a portion of Electoral Areas F, G and H and may be viewed via the following hyperlink: Service Area
The cost to property owners within the service area is in accordance with the Local Government Act, and the maximum amount that may be requisitioned annually for the Service is the greater of $249,736.00, or the amount equal to the amount that could be raised by a property value tax rate of $0.4471 per $1,000.00 applied to the net taxable value of land and improvements in the Service Area.

The RDN Board may proceed with the adoption of Bylaw No. 1785 and Bylaw No. 1789 unless, by the deadline, Elector Response Forms are certified by the Corporate Officer as having been signed by at least 10 per cent of the electors of the Service Area indicating that the Board must obtain the assent of the electors (referendum) before proceeding. Elector Response Forms must be given in the form established by the RDN Board and will be provided to electors of the Service Area upon request.
Please note: The only persons entitled to sign the Elector Response Forms are the electors of the Service Area, which is the area to which the approval process applies. Eligible electors are persons meeting all of the Resident or Non-Resident Property Elector qualifications - see Notice.
Deadline - the deadline for delivering the signed Elector Response Forms is 4:00 pm on Friday, July 26, 2019. Forms must be received by the Corporate Officer at the Regional District of Nanaimo, 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo, BC V9T 6N2 by the deadline to be counted. The Elector Response Form may not be submitted by email or by fax as original signatures are required.
